A Half-Century Legend - IWC Ingenieur
In 1976—fifty years ago—IWC Schaffhausen launched the Ingenieur SL (Reference 1832). It was not only a spiritual successor to the original Ingenieur but also a bold expression of the creative genius of Gérald Genta during his golden era. It was during the 1970s that this Geneva-born artist and watch designer defined an entirely new category—the luxury steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet—through iconic creations like the Ingenieur SL, thereby leaving an indelible mark on the history of Swiss watchmaking. However, this visionary masterpiece did not achieve commercial success at the time of its debut; between 1976 and 1983, only 598 Ingenieur SL watches were produced. Over the ensuing decades, the Ingenieur SL gradually captured the attention of collectors, eventually becoming one of the most sought-after models in the brand's modern history. In 2023, IWC Schaffhausen launched the contemporary Ingenieur collection, drawing inspiration from the pioneering design of the Ingenieur SL. The new models retain classic design elements—such as the bezel secured by five functional screws, the three-dimensional "Grid" dial pattern, and the integrated bracelet—while enhancing ergonomics and wearing comfort through meticulous finishing and detailing. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Genta’s iconic design, IWC Schaffhausen is now presenting two limited-edition Ingenieur Automatic models, available in case diameters of 40 mm and 35 mm. Alexia Genta, daughter of Gérald Genta and co-founder of the Gérald Genta Heritage Association, stated: "It has been 50 years since my father created the Ingenieur SL, and I am amazed that his work continues to inspire so many people decades later. I am honored to see IWC carrying on his artistic legacy with the contemporary Ingenieur collection and writing a new chapter based on his classic design."
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary Edition (Ref. IW328910) and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary Edition (Ref. IW324909) are each limited to 1,150 pieces. A distinctive silver-plated dial featuring a fine brushed finish serves as the most striking design element of these two new models. While the three-dimensional "grid" pattern is undoubtedly the most famous dial characteristic of the Ingenieur SL, IWC has also released versions with different dial designs to enrich the collection's aesthetic. Notably, a Reference 1832 model from the 1970s featured a distinctive brushed silver-plated dial, a design that inspired these two 50th-anniversary editions. The new models feature rhodium-plated hands and metal indices filled with Super-LumiNova® luminescent material. Additionally, the branding has been subtly modified: the Ingenieur lightning-bolt logo at the 6 o'clock position incorporates the number "50" to celebrate the anniversary of the Ingenieur SL.
Both new models are crafted from stainless steel and feature an integrated bracelet connected by intermediate links, optimizing ergonomics for a comfortable wearing experience. Particularly noteworthy is the meticulous surface finishing: the bracelet of the 40mm model features a satin finish, while the intermediate links of the 35mm model are polished. The iconic bezel of the Ingenieur collection is secured to the case ring by five screws; its surface features a satin finish complemented by finely polished edges, further accentuating the sculptural aesthetic derived from Gérald Genta’s original design.
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 "50th Anniversary" edition is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre. This self-winding movement features a double-pawl winding system that delivers a power reserve of 120 hours. Like the original Ingenieur SL from the 1970s, this model is equipped with a soft-iron inner case to protect the movement from magnetic fields. In contrast, the Ingenieur Automatic 35 "50th Anniversary" edition features a transparent sapphire-glass case back that reveals the intricate workings of the 47110 calibre, which is decorated with circular graining and Geneva stripes and fitted with a gold-plated rotor.
